Social Mobilization for DOTS in Urban Slums of Indore

(Urban DOTS Project)


Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India initiated Urban DOTS project for prevention and control of TB on a pilot basis in 4 cities of India i.e. Mumbai, Varanasi, Hyderabad and Indore with the financial support of Global Fund to fight against AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) & Technical support of World Health Organization. M.P. Voluntary Health Association (MP VHA) is being a federation of NGOs working in the field of Health and Development has been given the responsibility of implementing the project in Indore city.

Urban DOTS Project titled Social Mobilization for DOTS in Urban Slums of Indore is being implemented in nearly 300 slums of Indore city since July 2005 with the active involvement of the stake holders like District Tuberculosis Control Society, NGOs/CBOs, Private Practitioners, Local Leaders, its Animators & Supervisors, Volunteers, DOTS Providers, Community and Media etc.

Major objectives of the project:

  • To identify, promote early detection, check dropouts
  • Establish the network to abridge the gap and enhance collaboration among NGOs, Community, Service Providers and government department for patient friendly treatment
  • To ensure peoples participation in RNTCP especially, in DOTS through IEC intervention
  • To strengthen the referral services through building capacity of NGOs, private practitioners, local leaders and health service providers

 

Major Interventions

Under the project different interventions have been undertaken to achieve the objectives. Such as Sensitization of NGOs/CBOs/Local leaders/Private practitioners and Service providers, Orientation of NGOs/CBOs, Orientation of Private Practitioners, training and follow-up of Animators and Supervisors, Media Advocacy, Convention of Animators and supervisors, General health camps, Production and procurement of IEC/Educational/training materials like (posters, stickers, handouts, news letters, wall writing, hoarding & glow sign), Setting up of Urban DOTS Information cum Counselling centers and Outreach activities like Community Meetings, Street Plays, Magic Show, puppet show, rally, TB Sandhesh yatra etc. One of the innovative approach for behaviour development communication was one to one contact and one to group contact by the Animators.
